Leafy green vegetables such as Swiss chard, spinach, and kale are full of vitamins A, C, and K, which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. These vitamins also have antioxidant properties that can protect your cells from naturally occurring cell damage.
Antioxidants are important for protecting our cells from free radicals and oxidative stress. Free radicals are highly unstable molecules that can cause damage to nearby healthy cells. This damage caused by free radicals is referred to as oxidative stress.

If you are not a fan of eating salads or raw leafy greens, why not try adding them to your next smoothie? Blending leafy greens with fruits such as bananas and berries will help mask their sometimes bitter taste while keeping their nutritional benefits.

Like olive oil, fatty fish also contain many polyunsaturated fats that play a significant role in reducing levels of bad cholesterol and maintaining healthy cells. However, the specific effects of these fatty acids differ, depending on whether they are derived from plant or animal sources.
Polyunsaturated fats from plants are called omega-6 fatty acids, while their fish counterparts are called omega-3 fatty acids. Although red meat in moderation may not necessarily pose a health risk, regular consumption of larger amounts has been associated with several cardiovascular diseases, as well as chronic inflammation.
Greater total consumption of meat, whether processed or unprocessed, has been associated with an increase in inflammatory biomarkers in the blood. A study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, for example, reported that replacing red meat with a different source of protein (such as fish or poultry) led to a decrease in inflammatory biomarkers. Cell membranes, which not only enclose cell contents but also perform important biological functions, are largely made up of a mix of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Saturated fatty acids are packed with tight molecular bonds that make them rigid and inflexible, whereas unsaturated fatty acids have looser bonds that allow them to be softer and more fluid.
Research has found that excessive intake of saturated fatty acids leads to stiffening of cell membranes, which interferes with normal cellular processes and contributes to the development of obesity and insulin resistance, as well as increased levels of circulating pro-inflammatory cytokines. Animal products such as meat and dairy, as well as some plant products such as coconut and palm oils, are high in saturated fatty acids. Limiting your intake of these foods can help keep cell membranes healthy and limit inflammation.
Refined carbohydrates are those that have been processed and had much of their fiber and nutrients removed. The most commonly consumed refined carbohydrates are white sugar and white flour.
Refined carbohydrates are metabolized faster than their whole-grain counterparts, causing blood sugar levels to spike and drop more suddenly. Also, refined carbohydrates lack fiber and nutrients and aren’t very filling, so you may have to eat a lot before you feel full.
Both the spikes in blood sugar and the potential weight gain from overconsumption of refined carbohydrates have been shown to increase cytokines and other inflammatory markers in the blood. (Source)
